Please consider nominating us for best podcast in the golden geek awards on BGG. In this week's episode. Jake and Brendan talk about revisiting games. What causes us to dust off and revisit a game after it has been on the shelf for some time? Are there some qualities that make a game more revisitable than others? Is revisitability even a word? Don't answer that last question. After an initial discussion, Jake and Brendan dive into some games that they have been revisiting lately and there experiences with them. Enjoy, Decisionaughts, and ask yourself, did I do my part... to nominate Decision Space for a golden geek award.</image:title>

We've conquered the first 150 episodes (I still can't believe that number) of Decision Space, and so we set our Interdecisional Spaceship on course for a new frontier. While long-time listeners will notice some passing similarities to our mission planning episode, this episode feels a little different. We unpack what we've done with the show thus far, our goals moving forward, and only end by sharing a few games we hope to cover in the year ahead. I hope you travelers enjoy this honest conversation (if at times a little naval gazing) about our show.</image:title>

This is distinctly not a discussion of games released in 2023, rather it is about the games that we are playing, that are hitting our tables this year. Also, Jake wants you to know that technically kickball and disc golf are essentially board games and remain as perpetual #0 on the top of his list. Today, Jake is here to recap 9 of those plays (only the most interesting one) for your in flight entertainment, complimentary while on board the Interdecisional Spaceship. LTF. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 132: Games that Play Fast (What We Talk About) - Good luck keeping up with the conversation in this week's throwback WWTA episode, because things move fast. If you don't believe me, then check the timestamps. We throw out games quicker than you can say, "I miss old school board games where you had to wait 20 minutes between turns!" In this week's episode we discuss, broadly, games that play fast, what that means, and what we perceive as a growing appetite in the board game hobby for this titular phrase. Ready or not the Interdecisional Spaceship is taking off right now! (Wow! That was fast).</image:title>

We are honored to be nominated alongside a ton of great podcasts. Good luck to everyone nominated in all categories! This weeks episode is something of an experiment. We are trying out a new deep dive format, where we provide our review and decision space exploration for Messina 1347 and reserve the second half of the episode for a related topical discussion on overcentralizing mechanisms (closely related to overcentralizing strategy and/or dominant strategy). We are trying to make sure that our deep dive episodes offer something to all of our listeners, even if you are unfamiliar and/or uninterested in Messina 1347. We'd love to hear your thoughts on how this went, and all feedback will absolutely be considered for future deep dive episodes! Now that the in-flight, safety information is taken care of, sit back and enjoy your trip on the Interdecisional Spaceship!</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 107: Campaign Games, Legacy Games, and a Game Design Case Study - In this episode, our intrepid co-pilot hosts first dive into the topic of campaign games and all the ways they are great and all the ways they are not. We discuss the campaign games we've played to date and how much of them we have actually finished. In the second part of the episode, we dive into a design case study for Brendan's game signed with Pandasaurus under the working title "End the Empire." Therein, Brendan discusses how he has tackled the exciting opportunity of extending his game with a campaign module. Jake take's the opportunity to pick at Brendan's choices, and tell him how he could or should have chosen differently. Brendan calls Jake an imperialist tyrant, so things are pretty much going normal over here. Why don't you hop into our Interdecisional Spaceship and come along for the ride. <image:title>Episodes - Episode 105: Elegance (What We Talk About) - We promised an inelegant conversation and oh boy do we ever deliver on that. In this what we talk about episode, we begin with a definition of elegance and then struggle to apply that definition to board games. Brendan thinks it is about being ingenious. Jake thinks it is about style. However, both of our intrepid hosts can agree on some overall trends that tend to make a game more likely to be elegant than not. As we think through and discuss this topic, we also discuss a whole bunch of games. This time we talk about the 2020 hit (I'd call it a hit), Bonfire. It's a psychedelic game about gnomes, guardians, and colorful bonfires, man. Truly, that is really all I can tell you about it. Also, it's a classic Feldian point salad euro, but it just hits different some of Feld's other, best offerings. Is that a good thing, a bad thing, or somewhere in between? We'll talk about that and more as we try to "find the path" through this episode (and fail). We do hope you'll join us in this. Let's get interdecisional! <image:title>Episodes - Episode 86: Blood Rage —A Game That Is Bigger Than Its Box - For the first time and at long last, we steer our Interdecisional Spaceship towards the Eric Lang galaxy. Our first stop in this sector of the known decisioverse is with the 2015 smash hit Blood Rage -- currently ranked as the 40th best board game of all time according to the users at Board Game Geek. In this episode we think a lot about the type of decision space offered by this innovative hybrid game that seeks to offer the best of both 2015 Euro and Ameritrash sensibilities, while at the same time seeking to be a game that is bigger than the box. Does it deliver on these incredible ambitions? Hop in because this space craft is departing now!</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 73: Lost Cities - Reiner Knizia Master of Theme - It's Reiner Knizia day on the Decision Space Podcast! This time we are deep diving and exploring the decisions in Lost Cities. Like last week's feature game, Riftforce, this is a lane-based, 2-player card game, only this one came out 22 years prior -- making it a fantastic companion to last week's episode. Join us in the Interdecisional Spaceship for this voyage back in time time time.</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 72: Riftforce - What’s This Lifestyle Dueling Card Game Doing In My Euro Filler? - Dust off your rift rocks (as they say) because today we are covering Riftforce. It isn't every day that we cover a new game on Decision Space, but Riftforce (2021), designed by Carlo Bortolini, was something of a perfect storm. First, Jake had the opportunity to play it at Geekway to the West and was blown away. Days later, Riftforce appeared in alpha on Board Game Arena, giving us ample opportunity to play the game, and play the game we did! As to whether the game held up to the ample play and the Decision Space lens, well you'll have to hop into the Interdecisional Spaceship and find out. We also shout out our friend Saroule's French-language gaming podcast on this episode, who was our sparring partner in prepping for this episode. If you'd like to check out Board Game Duel, you can find it here: https://boardgameduel.podbean.com/ If you want to learn more about the upcoming Riftforce expansion guilds (elements), then you can find information here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2744875/riftforce-beyond-expansion</image:title>

Today, we welcome you to the first official Phil Walker-Harding (PWH) Fan Club meeting of 2022. We are joined by none other than the club president himself, Paul Salomon (designer of Honey Buzz). In this meeting, we'll discuss Bärenpark the classic, award winning tile-laying game about building a park filled specifically with bears. Say what you will about the saturation of roll and write games in the market today. Way back in 2018, this clever little game was making major waves and bringing new attention to the genre. Does this game hold up amongst all the roll and writes that would follow, and what does it say about the genre at large. We talk about all this and more as we explore the decisions in our interdecisional spaceship !</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 47: Azul - Clones The Castles of Burgundy’s Decision Space?! - 2018 Spiel Des Jahres winner, the 58th best game of all time on Board Game Geek, and designed by the esteemed Michael Kiesling, you don't need our podcast to tell you that Azul is a good game. So today on Decision Space, we dive deep into the decision space that emerges from Azul's simple set of mechanisms as players tussle over tile supremacy. You'll never guess which game/region of France this discussion will take us to, so hop in the Interdecisional Spaceship and we'll tell you on the way!</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 46: Raiders of the North Sea - A Raid to Remember - If you've been playing hobby board games over the past six years, then you likely have at least a passing awareness of the output of Garphill games and designer Shem Phillips. (If you are new to hobby board games, then welcome!) In today's episode we cover the Garphill Game that first put Shem on ther radar for many of us, Raiders of the North Sea. Raiders is a worker placement game, with an efficiently brilliant work displacement mechanic that has not only stayed in the conversation six years post publication, but today finds itself inside the top 100 games of all time on Board Game Geek. Time to hop in the Interdecisional Spaceship with a course set for decision exploration. Wait... are those sleigh bells?</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 44: Kingdom Builder - We’re Gonna to Need a Bigger Decision Space - Back with yet another classic game and yet another Spiel De Jahres winner, this week on Decision Space it is Kingdom Builder. We bring out our magnifying glasses to explore the decisions in this game, and it is a good thing we did because is the smallest decision space we've come across yet. But perhaps a small decision space is all you need to have a great time and, after all, this game did win the most prestigious award in board games. So what exactly is the deal here? Only one way to find out. We now welcome you into our Interdecisional Spaceship and into this conversation which will continue as always in our discord after the conclusion of the show.</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 43: Patchwork - Buttons Rule Everything Around Me - We may have topped ourselves and put out our giggliest episode ever! It's true, we laughed a lot and had a great time exploring the decisions in Uwe Rosenberg's classic Patchwork. This is a game that hides a lot (of negative points) under its adorable (or gruesome - hello Halloween edition) exterior. Don't get it twisted. The game's cute, but to become the Button Master, you'll hash it out in a strategic, no-luck affair. So are these decisions for you, hop into the Interdecisional spaceship and find out!</image:title>

      <image:title>Episodes - Episode 34: Imhotep - The Perfect Poached Egg? - This week on Decision Space, Imhotep! Designed by Phil Walker-Harding and a 2016 Spiel Des Jahres Nominee is a game about placing rocks, sailing boats, and getting in each other's way all the while. There isn't much more to it than that in this incredibly simple poached egg. I mean game. Will Jake and Brendan find this poached egg of a game to be bland, or will a perfectly runny yolk, fluffy texture, and pinch of salt prove that a poached egg alone can be more than you ever expected and all you'll ever need. I'm losing faith in this metaphor as I go. Anyways, dig in into this week's episode.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - A Game Strategy Guide for Carl Chudyk’s Innovation - Innovation is a wonderful card game by Carl Chudyk that has a very simple set of rules and a rich selection of cards that produce interesting and challenging board situations.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Eight Tips to Challenge the Competition in Challengers! - Challengers! is an auto-battler style card-driven drafting game that was recently nominated for the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2023. I first had the opportunity to play this game at Geekway to the West in St. Louis a few weeks ago and it hit the table in a raucously fun game at the max player count–eight players. Challengers! feels something like a gamery party game. The entire game is structured in the style of a round robin tournament in which players do a little drafting, battle an opponent, hone their deck and continue on for seven delightful matches (with an exciting finals for the two highest placing players). It’s one part deck builder, one part drafting game, one part card game tournament simulator, and one part auto-battler. While Challengers! Isn’t the heaviest game around I was crestfallen after my in-person play because I knew it’d be tough to get a full table together to play frequently.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Eight Tips to Challenge the Competition in Challengers! - If you’re not sure about if you should cut your deck size down in the early to mid-game, try to keep your deck to seven unique card types or less. There are expectations to this however, if you’re playing cards from the Haunted House set like Butler and Vacuum Cleaner that clear out your bench you can afford to push it a bit more. I tend to play in a risk averse manner but each copy of a card like this gives you about 1.5 cards worth of extra room in your deck for different card types.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Eight Tips to Challenge the Competition in Challengers! - If you are dealt a few strong A or B deck cards during the transition from early to mid game or from mid game to late game it can absolutely be the right decision to take from the ‘weaker’ stack search for duplicates. In this example I drew into a lot of strong B cards in this Funfair deck that I would benefit from having copies of, so in this case I opted to continue to draw from Deck B rather than pulling a single card from Deck C.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Six Tips to Stop The Competition in Can’t Stop - Can’t Stop is a simple push your luck game designed by Sid Sackson and originally published in 1980 and is currently available to play on BoardGameArena (BGA). I was first introduced to the game on the Decision Space discord and I was immediately hooked. I have a soft spot for push your luck games like Quacks of Quedlinburg and Incan Gold. I’ve been asked to write some strategy tips for Can’t stop, which I will. But I will also get into why I think Can’t Stop is a better push your luck game than other games in this genre.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - Six Tips to Stop The Competition in Can’t Stop - This sort of push your luck means that if you are behind you are very much incentivized to push your luck indefinitely. Push it as hard as it will go. And if you win, that makes for one hell of a story. Can’t Stop is special because it lets you push your luck as much as you want. Incan Gold is somewhere in between. While you can’t push your luck indefinitely, you definitely have to push your luck some if you want to win and you can push it quite a bit.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - The Decision Space of the Game Monopoly - There’s been a meme going around about the differences between the European and American badgers. I generated some AI pictures and went from a warm cozy feeling to breaking out in a cold sweat in five seconds. I’m not sure I would say that boardgames are exactly like badgers, but there are some who would make just this analogy between the civilized Eurogames of our millennium and the old classic, Monopoly. Although, sure, the game differences have much less to do with nationality and everything to do with decades of evolving game design – Monopoly was released in 1935, and even then it was based on “The Landlord’s Game” from 1903.)</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - The Decision Space of the Game Monopoly - This is the part of the game where you roll around the board, passing Go and stuff, and most importantly, buying property. And right off the bat, we meet the first great (but not greatest) practical joke the designer(s) played on us. In this stage, there are no decisions to make! At least, not meaningful ones. At least, not if you want to win. Sure, winning isn’t everything, but if you’re not into winning – and honestly, that’s perfectly acceptable – you can probably find a more fun game to not win at. Movement in Monopoly is completely deterministic. Roll the dice, move that many spaces. Maybe go to Jail. No decisions here.</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/614b6bb6b53d3634beec805f/1661444191159-DM8P1TUFKJNJPZVFE49V/unsplash-image-ku7lFc6zZ28.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - The Decision Space of the Game Monopoly - The good news, if you’re still with me, is that in almost all cases of how the properties fall out, there is a game to be had, and each player has a definite possibility of winning. Not always an equal chance, but usually a decent one at least. If one player has a monopoly and you and the third player don’t, you can make a deal with that third player. It doesn’t matter if player 3 has like a million dollars and most of all the properties, while you have like $12 and the worst of the rest. If they are too important to trade with you, they will suffer the same fate as you, except their suffocating death will be a bit more drawn-out. You can go ahead and congratulate them on this.</image:title>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/614b6bb6b53d3634beec805f/1661444278328-G5WEY35MQPFCXF5J1OKO/unsplash-image-CyuRKLT32vw.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - The Decision Space of the Game Monopoly - Ideally, you’d be totally loaded and can hotel it up and still have enough reserves to withstand landing on other players’ hotels a few times. But that never happens. There is always going to be a gamble – a big gamble – and a decision of how much money to put into development and how much to leave in reserve.</image:title>
      <image:caption>It’s not easy. You have to play aggressively to win, but you have to take measured risks. Again, the whole game state is involved. Repeating myself, this includes:</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/614b6bb6b53d3634beec805f/1661444948658-GHY441N9WNKEA7UGD1U9/unsplash-image-MkoTQg_5xjw.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - The Decision Space of the Game Monopoly - Ok, to be fair, I was a bit hasty in writing off your chances and your life. Apologies. The dice are random, and it is very possible to recover, and depending on how other players are doing, it may be worth their while to toss you some money for some worthless property and keep you in the game. So, the death spiral isn’t irreversible, but still, if you have N players, it’s a guarantee that N-1 of them are going down. Enjoy! Might as well mention the punch-line of the final joke, which won’t surprise anyone. For all the depth of those decisions that I claimed were interesting, in the end, luck plays a major role. In a sense, this can be inevitable. If you’re playing with others who are skilled at evaluating the board and making those decisions, the trades will be calibrated to be generally equitable among the participants. All other things being even, the dice will call the shots from here on out. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t personally consider this game to be a luck-fest. The better strategies will win out, but it will take more than a few plays. There aren’t enough rolls to even things out in the critical period of a single game.</image:title>

      <image:title>Articles - The Three Types of Objectives in Games - Cascadia | Juxtaposed Animals, Overlaid Habitat</image:title>
      <image:caption>In Cascadia there are two primary ways in which players score points, Animals and Habitats. Animal scoring is typically juxtaposed–selecting bears comes at the expense of pursuing salmon, taking an elk token means you did not take an available bear or salmon with your action. There are a few exceptions to this, Foxes are overlaid as they care about the animal tiles around them, Hawk scoring card D also overlays onto other animal objectives because it cares about unique animal types between two hawks. Typically, however, in Cascadia, animal scoring opportunities are juxtaposed.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Players have a solitary goal in Knizia’s Modern Art–to have the most money at the end of the game. This objective provides a direction for the players but very little tension (there’s some natural tension because you must spend money to make money in Modern Art). However, the real tension in the system comes from not knowing which artists will be the most popular (valuable) in a given round, or over the course of the game.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - The Three Types of Objectives in Games - The Resistance | Solitary</image:title>
      <image:caption>The Resistance gives players a solitary objective–to win three rounds (if you’re a member of the resistance) or prevent members of the resistance from winning three rounds if you’re a spy. In play, players are entirely focused on this single objective and the game's tension comes from the fact that each team has an opposing solitary objective they’re working towards.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - The Three Types of Objectives in Games - Race for the Galaxy | Juxtaposed</image:title>
      <image:caption>This lens can be useful in looking at objectives adjacent to scoring conditions too; for example, in Race for the Galaxy two end game conditions are juxtaposed. The game ends if any player ends a round with 12 or more cards in their tableau or the victory point chips run out. These ending objectives forge the two archetypal strategic paths for the game—go wide quickly, playing cards to your tableau, vs building and efficient engine that can be run multiple times for highly efficient point payoffs. Race, however, wouldn’t be the stellar game it is if it was solely defined by these binaries. Somewhere between these two poles exists many interesting and nuanced hybrid paths to victory depending on the cards one is dealt and the lines other players at the table are taking. Perhaps the best lesson Race offers when examined with this lens is the emphasis that juxtaposed objectives can place on strategic pathfinding in a given play. Done well, that strategic pathfinding puzzle can be an infinitely interesting dance between player and decision space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - The Three Types of Objectives in Games - Welcome To… | Pools + Parks Juxtaposed, House Groupings Overlaid</image:title>
      <image:caption>Welcome To… uses both overlaid and juxtaposed objectives. It’s point rich pools and parks are juxtaposed objectives. Pursuing pools comes at the opportunity cost of working on parks and vice versa (though the game gives players the flexibility to try to do both in the course of the game). However, it also overlays other objectives on top of these decisions. Both it’s City Plan shared objectives and Housing Estates (groupings of houses of different sizes) overlay onto the park and pool objectives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - The Three Types of Objectives in Games - 7 Wonders Duel | Overlaid</image:title>
      <image:caption>7 Wonders Duel is an interesting case study with this lens. At first it seems that the three different victory conditions (Science victory, military victory, and having the most points at game end) are juxtaposed, however, design decisions push these paths towards being more overlaid than they otherwise would be (which goes a long way in preserving the tension in the game). Progress towards a science victory can be beneficial in terms of end game scoring and a military victory (assuming the correct progress tokens are available, for example, “Strategy” which makes the players military more effective). Progress on the Military track gains you points before it outright wins you the game.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - The Three Types of Objectives in Games - The Fox in the Forest | Juxtaposed</image:title>
      <image:caption>In the Fox in the Forest, each hand of 13 tricks players either want to win very few tricks (0-3) making you “Humble” or win 7-9 tricks making them “Victorious.” These goals are directly juxtaposed. Missing the mark on playing towards the Humble objective will potentially leave them with a measly 1 point if they score 4 tricks. This juxtaposed scoring creates real tension and to amplify this the game adds a penalty for losing to the “Humble” player in this zero sum tug-of-war, granting them 0 points for being “Greedy.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - The Three Types of Objectives in Games - Babylonia | Juxtaposed until it’s Overlaid</image:title>
      <image:caption>Reiner Knizia’s Babylonia is a fascinating case study for this framework. There are three primary paths towards scoring points in the game: Cities, Farms, and Ziggurats. These scoring paths are initially juxtaposed as progress towards scoring Cities means the player isn’t building momentum on claiming ziggurat spaces or snatching up high value farm tiles.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Articles - 7 Wonders Architects Review by Aurore - Decision Space</image:title>
      <image:caption>On face value the decision space is very narrow. In each turn you typically only get to choose which card to take from one of three decks of cards. Not only that, but because one deck is hidden and two decks are revealed, it is generally better to take from the random deck, because taking from a revealed deck has a chance of giving your opponent more information. Different cards, wonders, and information can all change the decision space over the course of the game. This makes the decision space dynamic. Some high value cards might have you choosing from a side deck right off the bat, but otherwise the first few turns usually involve players simply taking a random card.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Articles - 7 Wonders Architects Review by Aurore - Technology</image:title>
      <image:caption>I won’t go over all the technologies as there are many of them, but the most important ones are the ones that grant additional cards when you trigger them. Cards that trigger off getting cards can vastly increase the number of cards you get throughout the game, but also allow you to take a card from a side deck and get first pick at the next card behind it. Those technologies change the value of cards and encourage you to grab cards from side decks. But maybe even more interesting is considering when to deny an opponent with a technology an opportunity to grab a card that triggers an additional card draw. In two player games, and often in three player games, denying is important, but the more players there are in the game the higher the cost to you, so you may decide to let them have it.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Articles - 7 Wonders Architects Review by Aurore - Resources</image:title>
      <image:caption>We’ve already gone over the benefits when you have technologies, but there are other situations to consider. Being able to close out the second to last stage requiring 3 of the same type can be very important, otherwise you sometimes get useless cards trying to complete it. Every resource that is unspent at the end of the game is wasted, so making sure you can use them is essential to winning. Wonders The staccato way that wonder stages are built is the tempo of the game. Closing out the game when your opponent has 6 unused resources is brutal. But closing the game is not the only way to win, if you focus on 3 point cards, war, and technology points, you can win games without finishing your wonder. The key is having a minimum number of wasted cards at the end of the game.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/614b6bb6b53d3634beec805f/9b820a78-5c07-48e9-bf62-60a6ca4aa177/a7w2.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Articles - 7 Wonders Architects Review by Aurore - Different wonders have different potential strategies. Some wonders grant additional cards and are the best for rushing the end of the game, while others provide the tools to build strong technology engines that can churn out points if the game goes long. Paying attention to your opponents, their wonders, and the strategy they are following can also change the decision space. If your opponent is rushing, you might choose not to build an engine, but focus on high point sources like war, blue cards, and points from technology cards.</image:title>
